The department of "Electronics and microelectronics" was established on 01.08.1987. The first Head of the department was Professor Dimitar Yudov, PhD. The initial academic staff of the department included: the associated professors Georgi Enchev, Yordan Kolev, Hristo Gigov; as well as the assistant professors Totyo Tsankov, Nikolay Abedinov, Plamen Pashev, Ivan Yankov, Ilia Kyosev and Emilian Bekov.

The development and realization of the initial curricula and syllabi were aided by experienced professors from national and international akin departments that had already proven their expertise. During the first years lectures were held by senior professors such as: Prof. Vladimir Kaliavin, from the National University of Electrical Engineering of Sankt Petersburg; Assoc. Prof. Elena Shoikova and Assoc. Prof. Ilion Stamboliev from the Technical University of Sofia. Courses were held also by prominent experts from the Bulgarian Academy of Science, The Technical University of Sofia, and The Medical University of Varna. Those partnerships have been still carried on at present. During the years of its existence the department has headed the bachelor and master courses in "Electronics", that in recent years have also been taught in English. 

Currently the department enrolls about 30 to 60 students for Bulgarian language courses and between 10 to 20 students for English language course. Presently the academic staff of the department includes 16 employees: 5 associated professors and 10 assistant professors, five of which have a PhD degree. At present there are 6 PhD students in the department. The head of the department is Professor Dimitar Kovachev, PhD. The department presents a modern technological view with high-tech laboratories that include up-to-date measurement, experimental, computer and industrial equipment.
